A must visit place in Mumbai to have a lunch or dinner is it’s Irani Cafe. Leopold Café, is 145 years old. Situated at the Colaba Causeway, Leopold is a well-known tourist attraction. During the 2008 terrorist attacks, Leopold café was among the few establishments which suffered the massacre. The unfortunate incident killed 10 and brutally injured many in the café. However, the restaurant was operational as usual after just four days. People rushed to have a glance of the remains but police had to shut down the restaurant due to security reasons. Today, the café has undergone a renovation, but unlike Hotel Taj, it deliberately left some scars untouched to summon up the innocents’ death.
The cafe was also mentioned extensively in the novel Shantaram and its sequel The Mountain Shadow.Shantaram is about an Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escapes from jail and flees to Bombay, as Mumbai was formerly called. Of all the very typical “Bombay” things and places mentioned in the book is the Leopold Café. The novel was the reason many patrons returned after the attack.
