This Act of Compassion by Mumbai Cops is heart warming
Lalita Subramanyam who lives alone from last 25 years in Mumbai was pleasantly surprised by Mumbai Cops (Matunga Police) on her 83rd birthday with a cake and a bouquet of flowers. She is on local police’s list of `senior citizens requiring care and protection’ who help her with her medicine purchases, bank transaction and other chores.
Senior police inspector BM Kakak regularly calls on her and he calls her like her mother. “She is like my mother…she was very happy with birthday celebration,” said inspector Kakad.
Her two children live in US and the third son lives in Bengaluru , but they are unable to visit their mother frequently.
Subramanyam was overwhelmed by this gesture of Police and blessed the officers.

Mumbai police have a dedicated helpline 1090 for senior citizens. Senior citizens living alone call the helpline if they require any help, or, sometimes, just because they are feeling lonely.
Late R R Patil, when he was the home minister, started the initiative under which police officials regularly meet the senior citizens living alone under their respective jurisdictions to help them and make them feel safe.
