Do You Know? Towers of Silence in Mumbai are for disposal of Dead bodies of Zorastrian community
Mumbai houses 3 Towers of Silence, open towers for disposal of the dead bodies of the Zoroastrians community. Zoroastrian tradition considers a dead body to be unclean, i.e. potential pollutants. There are rules for disposing of the dead as safely as possible to prevent the pollution of earth or fire, the bodies of the dead are placed atop a tower and so exposed to the sun and to scavenging birds.
Inside the Tower of Silence there are 3 rings (Huge Circular Structure like Water Well) also called ‘Dakhma’, used for disposing body of the dead Parsi people. All 3 Bavdi are separately built for ‘Males’, ‘Females’ and ‘Children’. After all rituals followed as per Zoroastrian community are completed the dead body is brought to this Dakhma inside tower of silence which is finally consumed by Eagles and Vultures.
However, not everyone has seen or even have a glance of them yet because they are surrounded by big walls, thick green trees and there is no visibility from surrounding. The towers are well secreted and planned and cannot be found easily
